Privacy Policy

Effective date: May 27, 2026

Phonomate is a children's speech therapy practice app. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and who can see it.

Camera

Camera Use – Bus Stop Game

The Bus Stop game uses your device's camera to provide real-time visual feedback for speech placement. When a speech attempt is detected, a single image frame is captured and transmitted to our server along with the accompanying audio for immediate analysis.

This data is processed instantly to determine whether the correct mouth and tongue position was used. No images or audio are stored in a database or permanent file. For technical reliability, the most recent frame may be briefly written to the server's system temp folder — it is overwritten on every new attempt and is never retained, backed up, or reviewed.

Image and audio data from Bus Stop is also processed by OpenAI's API solely for the purpose of real-time speech analysis. OpenAI does not store this data.

Microphone Use

Several games use your device's microphone to record short speech samples during practice. These recordings are transmitted to our server for real-time analysis to evaluate pronunciation of the target sound.

Speech audio is also processed by OpenAI's API (Whisper) solely to transcribe and evaluate what was said. No audio recordings are stored, saved to a database, or retained after processing. OpenAI does not store this data.

Accounts & Login

Phonomate requires an account to use. We collect your email address when you sign up, which is used solely for login and account recovery. Authentication is handled by Clerk. We do not store passwords.

Parents or guardians create the account and are responsible for their child's use of the app.

Data We Collect & Store

When your child plays a game, we record the following for each attempt:

• The game played, the target sound, and the word practiced
• Whether the attempt was correct or incorrect
• The date and time of the attempt

We also store child profile names that you create within the app.

We do not store audio recordings or images. Short audio and image samples are transmitted during gameplay for real-time analysis only — they are processed immediately and discarded. Neither we nor OpenAI retain this data.

We do not use analytics services, advertising SDKs, or third-party tracking of any kind. Your data is never sold.

When you delete your account, all associated data — including child profiles and game attempt history — is permanently deleted from our systems immediately.

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs)

If you connect your child's profile to a speech-language pathologist using a practice code, that clinician will be able to see your child's game attempt history (sounds practiced, correct/incorrect results, and dates). This is the core purpose of the data — to help clinicians track progress and guide therapy.

You can disconnect from a clinician at any time from within the app, which removes their access to future data.

Subscription & Billing

Paid subscriptions are managed through RevenueCat and billed through Apple's App Store. RevenueCat processes your subscription status (active, trial, or expired) to determine your level of access within the app. We do not see or store your payment card details — billing is handled entirely by Apple.

Children's Privacy

This app is designed for use by children under the guidance of a parent or speech-language pathologist. Accounts are created and managed by parents or guardians — children do not sign up independently. We have designed this app in accordance with COPPA. We do not collect personal information directly from children.

We collect only the minimum data needed to provide the service (game results and child profile names). This data is visible only to the account holder and any connected SLP. We do not share it with advertisers or any other third parties.

To delete your account and all associated data, use the Delete Account option in the app's Profile tab.

Data Security

We take reasonable technical measures to protect your data. In the event of a data breach that may affect your personal information, we will notify affected users promptly.

Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we will update this page. Continued use of the app after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the new policy.

Terms of Service

Effective date: June 27, 2026

By using Phonomate, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

Not a Medical Service

Phonomate is a supplemental practice tool designed to support speech sound development at home between therapy sessions. It is not a medical device, clinical diagnosis tool, or substitute for evaluation and treatment by a licensed speech-language pathologist.

The app is intended to complement — not replace — skilled professional care. Decisions about a child's speech and language development should always involve a qualified clinician.

AI Accuracy Limitations

Phonomate uses AI (speech recognition and image analysis) to evaluate speech attempts in real time. These evaluations may be incorrect.

Do not interpret the app's results as clinical assessments. A child's performance in the app does not constitute a diagnosis, prognosis, or professional evaluation of any kind. Always consult a speech-language pathologist for clinical interpretation of progress.

Subscriptions & Billing

Phonomate offers optional paid subscriptions billed monthly or annually through Apple's App Store. Subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. To cancel, go to Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions on your iOS device. Subscription management and billing are governed by Apple's terms. Refund requests must be submitted directly to Apple — we do not issue refunds.

Free trials, where offered, convert to paid subscriptions automatically at the end of the trial period unless cancelled beforehand.

Limitation of Liability

Phonomate is provided "as is." We make no warranties about the accuracy of AI evaluations or the outcomes of using the app. We are not liable for any decisions made based on the app's output.

Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, without regard to conflict of law provisions.

Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms at any time. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
